Dear Coastline user,

Our mission is to eradicate car crashes, and we create services and technology to make that goal a reality. Our services include driver training, our website, and the Coastline app. When you use these services, you’ll share some information with us. We want to be upfront about the information we collect, how we use it, whom we share it with, and the choices we give you regarding the information we collect.

Information We Collect

The main reasons we collect information is to create a wonderful and safe experience for students, parents, and instructors, and to continually improve the services we provide and develop new ones. There are two basic categories of information we collect: information you choose to give us, and information we receive when you use our services.

Information you choose to give us

When you register for Coastline, either to take lessons or to use the app or website, you will provide us with basic information such as your name, email address, date of birth etc. If you sign up for lessons or purchase any other service, you will provide your credit card information to make payment. While you use the Coastline app to log drives, you are sharing your location and speed with us, as well as the 3D-accelerometer data that measures the vibrations and forces on your phone while you’re driving.

Information we receive when you use our services

When you use our services, we collect information about which services you use, how you use them, for how long, etc. For example, if you use the Coastline app to study for your written test, we might know which questions you answered, how long it took to answer each one and which answers you gave. When you take a lesson, we might record video both inside and outside the training vehicle. Here’s a fuller explanation of the information we get when you use our services:

Usage information

We collect information about your activity through our servers. For example, if you open the app and log a drive, we might know how long you had the app open for and whether you opened the app back up to stop the log or if it ended automatically. We might also collect statistics such as how many times you log drives or how many test questions you answer. When you use our website we may know, for example, the pages you visit and at what time.

Device information

When you use our services, we collect information about the device you use. For example, what type of phone or computer you are using and the operating system and software you are using. We may also collect information about the unique device identifier, IP address, and internet service provider.

Location information

When you use our services, we collect information about your location. For example, when you access our website or app, we might know your general location. When you log drives, you are sharing your precise location and speed with us. When you take a driving lesson, your instructor might be logging that drive, so by extension, we’ll be logging your location and speed during that lesson.

Audio & Video during lessons

We want to create a safe environment for your lesson, and to find new ways to help you learn. When you take a driving lesson with a Coastline instructor, we may record the session using interior and/or exterior cameras. If used, this camera or cameras will be in plain view and might record, for example, how you are operating the vehicle, where you are looking when you drive, and your interactions with the instructor. By taking a lesson with Coastline, you consent to video and audio being recorded during that lesson.

Information collected through cookies and other technologies

Like most websites and mobile apps, we might use cookies and other technologies such as web beacons and unique device identifiers to collect information about your activity, browser, and device. Most browsers accept cookies by default, but you can usually delete or reject cookies.

Third-party services

We use several third-party services to learn about how people engage with our site and apps. These include analytics services, crash reporting, user login management, and payment services, among others. Each of these services may collect information when you use our services, and they each have their own privacy policies. As of September 25, 2024, the services we use include Segment, Firebase, Google Analytics products, Meta ad products, Microsoft Bing and Clarity, TikTok ad products, Amplitude, Impact, Kustomer, MixPanel and customer.io.

How We Use Information

Our primary goal is to use the information we collect in ways that make the experience better for students, parents, and instructors. There are uses we haven’t even thought of yet, so rather than attempt to make an exhaustive list, we will continue to update this privacy notice as we develop new products and services. Here are some of the ways we use information today or intend to in the very near future:

- develop, operate, improve, deliver, maintain, and protect our products and services - send you communications, including by email. For example, we may use email to respond to support inquiries or to share information about our products, services, and promotional offers that we think may interest you. - monitor and analyze trends and usage - use information we’ve collected from cookies and other technology to enhance the services and your experience with them - provide an enhanced learning experience

In addition to the above, these are some specific ways we might use video recorded from your lessons:

- To develop ways to enhance learning, such as sharing video clips with you from your lesson - For continuous improvement for your instructor - For use in the event of a crash or any other safety or security issue - To train software to provide automated driver coaching

If there are specific use cases you’d prefer to opt out of, please email hello@coastlineacademy.com. Also, we may want to use video from your lesson in our instructor training program. If so, we’ll ask for your explicit consent first.

Other ways data can be shared

In the even that Coastline is acquired or goes bankrupt, all data we collect will likely be transferred to the new owners, subject to this privacy notice and our terms of service.

There are situations in which we could be legally or ethically required to share personal data with third parties. For example, if we are served a valid and legally enforceable request by law enforcement, or if we have reason to believe that you or someone else is in serious danger. We won’t take these situations lightly and will have your best interests in mind when we decide how to respond in each case.

Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy using Coastline!

Sincerely,
Nigel Tunnacliffe and Matt Harvey, Founders
