Can I Take Driver's Ed Without A Permit?

Published on 2021-08-26 in Drivers Ed

You're ready and raring to get on the road. We get it! The prospect of starting the process to obtain a driver's license can be an exciting time for new teen drivers. In fact, you may be wondering if you can jump-start the process by starting driver's ed as soon as you can, even before you get your permit.

But is that even possible?

The Answer: Yes! (Well, kind of.)

Driver's education courses are an essential component of driver training. Through your driver's ed education, you'll learn about the rules of the road, safe driving practices, and get the all-important behind-the-wheel practice. Not all states require driver's education, however, and the ones that do will have you begin and/or complete the classroom or online component of driver's education (theoretical) before you take your permit exam. It's important to note, however, that while you can take your classroom course without a permit, most states have a minimum age where driver's education courses are available. So if you're 12 years old and reading this - sorry to say, you'll have to wait a few years.

Classroom vs. Behind-the-Wheel

Now, even though you are eligible to begin. your driver's education before you have your permit, this does not mean you can legally get behind the wheel. (Sorry!)

Remember that classroom driver's education is where you'll learn the rules of the road, vehicle safety, and all that other good stuff you should know before getting behind the wheel for the first time.

But for your behind-the-wheel training and practice, all states legally require that you hold a valid permit before you jump in that driver's seat. Again, each state is a little different in terms of what age you'll be able to get your permit and if you'll be required to take in-car lessons from a professional driving instructor. (Although, we firmly believe that every new driver should take driving lessons! Not only is it vital for your education and safety - it's fun, as well!)
