Can You Take Drivers Training Online In Indiana?
Thanks to advances in technology and the pandemic, more and more people are wanting to do things online rather than in person. This also pertains to people looking to get their driver's license for the first time. If you are one of those people, then you might be wondering can you take drivers training online in Indiana? We have that answer for you below!
What Does Driver's Training Mean?
We take a closer look at what driver's training is exactly. Driver training means behind-the-wheel instruction, extended learning, observation time and classroom instruction provided by a driving school whose purpose is to teach students how to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Can You Take Driver's Training Online In Indiana?
In Indiana, this would depend on when you plan on getting your probationary driver's license. If you plan on getting your license before you are 16 years and 270 days old, then you are required to complete driver's education. However, if you are 16 years and 270 days or older, then you are not required to take a Drivers Ed course. The Drivers Ed course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction, which can be completed online.
Driving Lessons Requirements
If you wish to obtain your probationary driver's license prior to being 16 years and 270 days of age, then you must complete six hours of behind-the-wheel driving lessons, which Coastline Academy offers. In addition to the six hours of driving lessons, you are also required to complete 50 hours of driving practice outside of the lessons with a licensed driving instructor, a certified driver rehabilitation specialist, or a licensed driver who is at least 25 years of age and who is related to you by marriage, blood, or legal status.
If the licensed driver is your spouse, they have to be at least 21 years of age. Of those 50 hours, 10 of them have to be completed at night. The minimum amount of time these hours can be completed is in 30 days. Needless to say, this portion of driver's training cannot be done online since you need to be inside a car to complete it.
To summarize, part of driver's training can be done online in Indiana (Drivers Ed), but the driving lessons would be done in-person. For anyone over 18, the driver's ed course and behind-the-wheel driving lessons are not required. You would still need to complete the 50 hours of driving practice before taking the road test. We do recommend taking both though, as it can only help prepare you more for the behind-the-wheel road test at the BMV office. We hope this clears it up for you!
