Who Needs To Take Indiana Drivers Education?
If you are wanting to get behind the wheel in Indiana and obtain your driver's license for the very first time, you might be wondering who needs to take Indiana drivers education? Coastline Academy takes on that topic today, as we look into the rules for Driver's Ed when it comes to Indiana drivers.
First Up: Learner's Permit
For teens in Indiana, if you are wanting to obtain an Indiana learners permit then you will need to enroll in a DMV-approved drivers education course if you are 15 years of age or older. Once you are enrolled in the classroom course and signed up for behind-the-wheel driving lessons, you will receive a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE).
You are not required to complete the classroom portion prior to receiving your CDE, but you must be enrolled in both the classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons. However, we do recommend completing the classroom course prior to taking the written test at the BMV office, as it would be great preparation for you.
Who Needs To Take Indiana Driver's Ed?
For the Drivers Ed portion, the need to take this course depends on when you plan on getting your probationary driver's license. If you plan on getting your license before you are 16 years and 270 days old, then you are required to complete driver's education. However, if you are 16 years and 270 days or older, then you are not required to take a Drivers Ed course. To sum it up, if the age you obtain your probationary license is:
- Before 16 years and 270 days (9 months) - Driver's education is required.
- After 16 years and 270 days (9 months) - Driver's education is not required.
