Why Professional Driver's Ed Makes a Difference
At Coastline Academy, we talk a lot about what it means to be a safe and confident driver for life. But what does that actually look like according to the numbers?
If you've ever wondered whether professional driver's education really makes a difference in your teen's safety behind the wheel, recent research delivers some eye-opening answers.

According to a 2007 study commissioned by NHTSA and conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute using Texas DPS data, parent-taught novice drivers were nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash in their first year of unrestricted driving than teens who received professional instruction. They were also more likely to receive traffic violations, including speeding convictions.

A 2015 study cited in NHTSA's Countermeasures That Work program reinforces these findings. Teens who completed formal driver's ed were found to have 28% fewer crashes, 42% fewer injury or fatal crashes, and 35% fewer traffic violations in their first year of driving compared to those who only logged supervised practice hours.
This isn't about parents not caring - we know they absolutely do! The gap comes down to curriculum coverage and trained teaching technique. Most parents who take on driver's ed at home don't cover the full course of study, and many teach based on their own driving habits rather than established instructional methods. Skills like hazard perception, risk calibration, and managing attention in complex traffic situations are things that trained, professional instructors are specifically equipped to develop in new drivers.

Here at Coastline, we're proud that our students pass the road test at roughly twice the statewide DMV average. But more than test results, we care about what happens to our students after they leave our cars. Parent coaching is an essential component in the development of safe teen driving skills. If you're looking to level up your driving education knowledge as your teen starts their driver's ed journey, consider enrolling in our Confident Parent Driver Coach course to get the facts and strategies you need to best guide your teen behind the wheel.
