The Saturday Night Conversation Every Parent Should Have Before the Keys Leave Your Hand

Published on in Drivers Ed

“If you had to pick the three most dangerous days of the week for a teen driver, you'd pick Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

Ask most parents which day of the week worries them most about their teen driving, and you'll get a range of answers. The data has a very specific one: Saturday. It's the single deadliest day on the calendar for teen drivers, with Sunday close behind, together with Friday accounting for 54% of all teen crash deaths — despite those three days making up less than half the week.

What makes weekend nights different

It isn't a coincidence. Weekend evenings are when teens are most likely to be driving with multiple friends in the car, when alcohol exposure from parties and social events peaks, when parental oversight is naturally looser because trips are longer and less structured, and when nighttime driving — already four times riskier per mile than daytime — is most concentrated. All four factors converge in the same few hours.

A trend worth taking seriously

In 2023, teen drivers were the only age group for which fatalities increased year-over-year, even as every other age group's numbers improved. That gap was widest specifically on weekends.

The highest-leverage moment for a family safety conversation isn't a weekday commute. It's Friday and Saturday night — and it's worth having the conversation before the first weekend of solo driving, not after.
