What Is Drivers Ed Course? A Deep Dive Into Drivers Education

Published on 2021-12-10 in Drivers Ed

Young drivers may have already determined this, but there is not one basic set of rules when it comes to Driver's Ed. Each state is different, so it can leave you wondering what you need to do to complete the driver's education portion. We take a look at what is a driver's ed course and what options you may have.

What Is Drivers Ed?

When it comes to drivers education, students are taught the techniques of driving a vehicle, as well as basic vehicle maintenance, safety precautions, traffic regulations and laws. Drivers Ed is a great way for new drivers to learn the rules of the road before getting behind the wheel themselves.

Online vs. Classroom Instruction

One of the big debates when it comes to Driver's Ed has to be whether or not to take an online course or classroom instruction. While both have their own pros and cons, that final decision comes down to you and your preferences in a learning environment. Texas even has a third option available, as you can take Parent-Taught Driver's Ed, so the options are out there.

The Actual Course

The number of hours needed to complete the course depends on how many hours your state requires. For the online course option, Coastline Academy does offer an online course for certain states. For our online courses, they can be broken down into the following syllabus:

  1. Chapter 1: Driving Is Your Responsibility
  2. Chapter 2: Human Factors Affecting the Driver
  3. Chapter 3: Natural Forces Affecting the Vehicle
  4. Chapter 4: Traffic Signs, Signals and Road Markings
  5. Chapter 5: Vehicle Systems
  6. Chapter 6: Defensive Driving, Speed, Lanes, Intersections and More
  7. Chapter 7: Sharing the Road, Causes of Accidents and Accident Prevention
  8. Chapter 8: Alcohol, Drugs and Driving
  9. Chapter 9: Licensing, Registration and Laws for Your Specific State
  10. Chapter 10: Earning a Drivers License in Your State

For an online course, you are free to move at your own pace. You could work 15 minutes a day and be done or make your way through four chapters in one day. The choice is yours, but you would need to work on the course at least for the number of hours your state requires.

Throughout the course, you will be tested on the material covered. There will be chapter quizzes to cover the content discussed and then a final quiz. If you pass the final quiz, you will then receive a certificate of completion to take with you to the DMV office!
