I Want To Take A Driver Education Course. What Are My Options In Texas?

Published on 2021-11-05 in Drivers Ed

If you are looking to start your journey to get your driver's license and live in Texas, you might be wondering what options you have available for the Driver's Ed course. For those living in Texas, new drivers have a couple options available to them to complete a driver education course, so check them out below.

Texas Driver Education Course Options

Teen drivers in Texas have two options available to them when selecting which driver education course they will be taking. Those options are:

  • Enrolling in an online driver education school
  • Enrolling in an approved parent taught course

Online Driver Education School

When enrolling in an online Driver's Ed school, the course would be broken down as follows:

  • An online driver education course that is Texas state approved.
  • Self-taught course, as you go through the different modules from the convenience of your own computer or smartphone at your own pace.
  • In total, you will need 32 hours of time spent completing this course.
  • The entire course must be completed before you can obtain your certificate of completion.
  • Once you have your certificate, you can then take the Texas Class C Exam to get your learner's permit.
  • From there, you will need to find a state-approved driving school, which Coastline Academy offers. You will need to also complete the following driving requirements:
  1. Seven hours of behind-the-wheel in-car instruction
  2. Seven hours of observation driving time
  3. 30 hours of additional practice driving time

Texas Parent Taught Driver's Ed

When enrolling in Parent Taught Driver Education in Texas, the course would be broken down as follows:

  • To start, your parent/guardian must fill out an application requesting to teach the course and send it to the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation.
  • Once approved, you and your parent/guardian can start working on the driver education course. After the first module is completed, you can then take the Class C Exam online and get a certificate to obtain your learner's permit.
  • The course is 100% state approved.
  • The course is self-paced by an instructor abiding by curriculum, but done at your parent's pace and order.
  • In total, you will need 32 hours of time spent completing this course.
  • With PTDE, you can learn the classroom side of things while at the same time working on your behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • You will have to complete the same 44 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, as broken down above.
  • Once the course is completed and your hours are done, then you can request a final completion certificate.
