One of our driving instructors shows you how to properly make a yield left turn in today's driving lesson video.

Meaning Of Yield Signs

For the yield sign, it is considered a regulatory sign and means to let other road users go first. When drivers approach a yield sign they must slow down and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and vehicles approaching from another direction. Yield signs are shaped like triangles pointing downward with the outside being red and the middle is white. They are usually posted at intersections where two roadways merge.

In some circumstances, a yield line may be painted on the pavement. If you see this, the driver must yield the right-of-way before crossing the yield line. The driver may proceed only after yielding and only when it’s safe to do so. Unlike with stop signs, drivers aren't required to come to a complete stop at a yield sign. The driver may proceed without stopping, as long as it is safe to do so.

The Steps

If you are trying to make a left turn and are approaching a yield sign or line, there are proper steps you need to take to complete the task safely and properly. Here are the steps to perform a yield left turn:

  • Yielding at an intersection involves slowing, but not necessarily stopping.
  • While looking for traffic, continue to roll.
  • Slow and stop for any traffic that has right-of-way.
  • Once clear, continue your turn.
