How Long Is the Driver's Ed Course In Nevada?

If you're under 18 and live in Nevada, you'll need to complete a driver's education course. How long is that course and what does it entail? Find out below!

Driver's Ed Courses: Nevada

First-time Nevada drivers can begin enrolling in driver's ed at age of 15. There are three paths to completing the mandatory 30-hour coursework requirement:

  • Attend a 30-hour classroom course and complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (10 at night) with an adult 21+ who has held a license for at least one year.
  • Complete a 30-hour online course and 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (10 at night) with an adult 21+ who has held a license for at least one year.
  • Complete 100 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with an adult 21+ who has held a license for at least one year. This option only applies if a) a classroom course is not offered within a 30-mile radius of your residence and b) you do not have access to the internet.

Note, that some private schools offer a driver's ed course consisting of 15 hours of classroom instruction and 5 hours of behind-the-wheel training. These schools must be specifically approved for this course by the Nevada DMV.

The Nevada Driver's Ed course consists of 30 hours of classroom or online instruction. While there is no mandatory behind-the-wheel requirement as it pertains to driving lessons, we encourage students of all and abilities to train with a professional driving instructor to help ensure success on the road test and to learn safe driving skills and habits. While there is not driver's education requirement to obtain a learner's permit (aside from the DMV-administered knowledge test), all drivers under 18 must complete the driver's education course outlined above before applying for their road test at the age of 16 or older.
