How Many Driving Lessons Should I Take A Week?

Published on 2021-08-11 in Driving Lessons

Learning to drive is a very exciting time in anyone's life. Yes, the process can be time-consuming and stressful, but in the end, you are learning to do something that will change your life for the better. We know many soon-to-be drivers are anxious to get through the training process as quickly as possible and might want to know how many driving lessons they can and should take in a week's time. We'll share our thoughts on this question below!

First Off: Legality

Certain states have regulations that dictate the timing of required driving lessons for those students under 18 years of age. While the majority of laws prohibit taking more than a certain number of hours in one day, some states do dictate that drivers under 18 must complete the behind-the-wheel lesson process in a time period no less than 2 weeks. If you have questions about this, our friendly Support Team will be happy to help guide you through these laws and requirements.

Putting it Into Context

At Coastline Academy, our certified instructors head into every driving lesson with the intention of making you a safer, more confident driver for life. And being a safe and confident driver means practice, practice, practice.

Think about a time you had to learn a sport, a musical instrument, or even a video game. How good were you the first time you tried? How about the second? The twentieth? The fact is that structured practice and repetition builds and solidifies skills that will lay the foundation for future learning.

Driving is not a passive activity! Many drivers report levels of fatigue or even exhaustion after long road trips, and for good reason! When you are driving, you are constantly using both your body and your brain to analyze situations, make decisions, and react in time. Practice, as they say, makes perfect, an idea that remains true when learning to drive.

Practice Time

How often should you be practicing your driving skills? Ideally, every day. Now, this doesn't mean you have to have to practice for hours each day. In fact, we don't recommend that! Depending on your comfort level with driving, you might start off with a small amount of time: 15-30 minutes a day. From there, you can increase your increments as you become more confident behind the wheel.

So What Does This All Mean For My Lessons?

Now for the question you've all been waiting for: how many lessons should I take per week?

The most effective way to build skills and driving confidence is to space your lessons in a way that allows for plenty of practice in between sessions.

Your first lesson will be your introduction to proper driving technique and the the rules of the road. After learning these skills, you should spend at least a week practicing these skills so you can spend your second lesson building on the first. Remember, if you take your second lesson too soon, you'll probably just be practicing basic skills all over again and not learn anything new. This may not sound like a big deal, but it could mean that you develop bad or even incorrect habits in your driving behaviors, which is not only unsafe, but may result in you failing your behind-the-wheel test.

Depending on the number of driving lessons required by your state, you may need to space out any subsequent lessons in a similar fashion. Remember that the more practice you get in between your lessons, the more your instructor can help you move on to more advanced driving skills.

Bottom Line

While there are often few or no set requirements as to the timing of driving lessons for those students under 18, to get the most out of your driving lessons, we suggest timing them in a way that allows you to move at a comfortable pace and build a skills foundation that will allow to become a safe and confident driver for life.
