How Many Hours Of Driving Lessons Does Illinois Require?

Published on 2022-05-23 in Driving Lessons

If you live in Illinois and are looking into getting your driver's license, then you know it can stressful and difficult to find all the information you may be looking for. You may be wondering how many hours of driving lessons does Illinois require and we have the answer for you below.

First Step: Instruction Permit

If you are 15 years of age or older, then you are eligible for an instruction permit. To get your permit, you must enroll in an approved driver education course, and must pass a vision and written test. The instruction permit must be held for a minimum of nine months and you must not acquire any driving convictions during the nine-month permit phase. The instruction permit is valid for up to two years.

Driving Hours Required

If you pass the written test, you will receive your instruction permit. This allows you to start your behind-the-wheel driving lessons. The behind-the-wheel driving lessons are part of the Driver's Ed course you enroll in, which includes 30 hours of in-classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.

On top of the six hours of driving lessons, teens are also required to complete 50 hours of driving practice outside of the lessons that are supervised by a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. Of those 50 hours, 10 of them have to be completed at night.

With the driving lessons and driving practice hours combined, that means you would need at least 56 hours of driving lessons before you can take the road test to move on to the Initial Licensing Phase in Illinois. Of course, you are always welcome to take more than 56 hours, as practice makes perfect!
