How Many Hours Of Driving Lessons Does Maryland Require?
For those teenagers living in Maryland that are looking to get their driver's license, you may be trying to work your way through all the different rules and regulations you will need to follow. You may be wondering how many hours of driving lessons does Maryland require and we address that question below.
First Step: Learner's Permit
If you are at least 15 years and 9 months old, then you are eligible for a learner's permit. You must hold a valid learner's permit before taking behind-the-wheel driver education or supervised driving on Maryland highways. To obtain a learner’s permit, the applicant must provide a completed Learner’s Permit School Attendance Certification form (DL-300) if they are under 16 and a parent or guardian must co-sign the learner’s permit application if they are under 18. They must pass a vision screening and a knowledge test and must be accompanied by a qualified supervising driver who is 21 or older and who has held a license for a minimum of three years when driving. A qualified supervising driver (parent, guardian or mentor) must complete a Practice Log for the learner’s permit holder which is issued by the MVA along with every learner’s permit.
Driving Hours Required
Once you obtain your learner's permit, you are allowed to start your training behind the wheel. The behind-the-wheel driving lessons are part of the Driver's Ed course you enroll in, which includes 30 hours of in-classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.
In addition to the six hours of driving lessons, teens are also required to complete 60 hours of driving practice outside of the lessons that are supervised by a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. Of those 60 hours, 10 of them have to be completed at night.
With the driving lessons and driving practice hours combined, that means you would need at least 66 hours of driving before you can take the road test to get your Provisional Driver's License in Maryland. Of course, you are always welcome to take more than 66 hours, as practice makes perfect!
