How To Sign Up For Drivers Ed?

Published on 2022-09-02 in Drivers Ed

While every state is different, most states do require teen drivers to take a driver's education course. You may know you have to take drivers ed, but many students and parents ask us how to sign up for Driver's Ed and we address that issue today.

What Is Drivers Ed?

During drivers education, young drivers are taught the techniques of driving a vehicle, as well as basic vehicle maintenance, safety precautions, traffic regulations and laws. Drivers Ed is a great way for new drivers to learn the rules of the road before getting behind the wheel themselves. Drivers education can be completed with two different options: Classroom Instruction or Online Instruction.

How to sign up for Drivers Ed and how much does it cost? We address that here!

What Does Drivers Ed Do?

Drivers education is a course that will teach new drivers the rules of the road and help prepare them for getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Often times, states require students to complete a driver education course before they can apply to get their learner's permit. For Driver's Ed, there are two options available to take the course: online or in a classroom.

Driver's Ed - Classroom Instruction

For classroom instruction, this would require students to attend classes in-person. Each student would be required to attend a specific number of hours, which would depend on their state's requirements. Most classroom instruction also includes behind-the-wheel and in-car instruction as part of the curriculum, but those time requirements would be separate from the in-class instruction.

The classroom instruction must be approved by that state's DMV. Some school districts do offer classroom instruction for driver's education, but more and more schools are not offering this anymore. Most students are opting to attend a private driving school to complete driver's ed for their drivers license.

Driver's Ed - Online Instruction

For online driver's education, the students get to complete the course at their own pace on their own devices. The students will read through the material for the course on a website or app and then complete each course and all the activities/quizzes associated with that course.

As with classroom instruction, each state requires a certain number of hours required for these online courses. However, the hours can be split up into what works for your schedule, as long as the required number of hours are completed while taking the online course. Each online course also has to be approved by your state's DMV.

How Long Does Drivers Ed Take?

This would be based on the state you live in. As you will learn by going through this driver's training process, each state has different requirements, restrictions and laws in place. For the courses we offer, Texas requires 32 hours, California, Colorado, Indiana and Nevada require 30 hours and Missouri is about 15 hours.

How To Sign Up For Driver's Ed?

The way you sign up for drivers education would depend on the instruction type you choose. For the classroom instruction, this can be done at your high school, if they still offer it, or at a private driving school in your area (as long as they are certified by your state's DMV).

Your state's DMV office should list the DMV-certified programs available in your state. If you want to do online driver's ed, then Coastline Academy offers that for certain states and is DMV-certified in those same states.
