Teen Drivers: Remember The Number 3 To Drive Safely
At Coastline Academy, our driving instructors work every day to offer driving lessons that will make our students safer, more confident drivers for life. We customize every lesson and every package to our students. With that, some of instructors pick up some tips and tricks along the way to share with their students, which is what we are doing today with the Number 3 rule.
Remember the Number 3
Thanks to one of our professional driving instructors, Rob M., he gave us these tips and tricks for new drivers. For Rob, the number three comes up often when he is talking to his students about driving safely and following the traffic laws.
Because of that, Rob came up with this list of skills and circumstances where remembering the number 3 could help out young drivers:
- Wait 3 seconds for a complete stop.
- Keep hands on the steering wheel at 9 and 3.
- There are three levels of braking: soft, medium and hard.
- Leave 3 seconds of traveling distance with the vehicle ahead.
- Drivers must give bicyclists 3 feet of clearance minimum for safety.
- When the traffic light turns green, delay entering the intersection for 3 seconds.
- You must know 3 arm signals to take a DMV behind-the-wheel test in some states.
- Make a 3-point turn when parked cars make a U-turn impossible.
- Drivers under 19 are nearly 3 times more likely to be involved in injury collisions.
- Right before entering an intersection, check in three directions: left, center, right.
- Coastline Academy uses a 3-lesson plan to train our students to drive defensively and safely.
- Traffic lights come in three colors: red, yellow and green.
- Some states use a point system for tracking dangerous driving habits. Racking up 3 points in 24 months for speeding, reckless driving or crashes will lead to a license suspension.
So, if you are struggling to remember something for an upcoming road test or during a driving lesson, think of the number 3 and it just might help you remember!
