SMOG Technique: Helping Drivers Change Lanes Safely
When you are learning to drive, your driving instructor can teach you new techniques to help make you a safer driver on the road. While many people struggle with changing lanes and making sure to check those blindspots before changing, our instructors will help you learn the S.M.O.G. technique while behind the wheel, but what does it consist of? Find out below!
The SMOG Technique
At Coastline Academy, we are on a mission to eradicate car crashes. One way to do that is to ensure young drivers are prepared when getting their driver's license. Make sure they are safe drivers and have the knowledge to make smart choices while behind the wheel.
Learning techniques, like the SMOG technique, during their driving lessons is one way to help ensure safe choices are made on the road. Many drivers do struggle when it comes to changing lanes safely, which is where the SMOG technique comes into play. SMOG means:
- Signal - Let other drivers know of your intentions by using your turn signal before you actually make the lane change.
- Mirrors - Check your mirrors to make sure everything is clear and no traffic approaching from the rear.
- Over-the-shoulder - Check your blindspot by looking over your shoulder to make sure it is clear.
- Go - After making sure everything is clear, go ahead and slowly change lanes. Remember to maintain your speed so you aren't interfering with the traffic already in that lane.
By using this technique, you can feel more confident when making those lane changes while behind the wheel! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our friendly support staff.
