Things You Learned In Driver's Training You Should Be Using Every Day
When did you take driver's training? While it may have been recently for some people, it could have been years ago for others and some of the things you learned can be forgotten. Some of those skills have been forgotten because you don't use them every day, like driving in snowy conditions if you live in the south.
With that being said, there are certain things you learned in Driver's Ed that you should be using every time you get behind the wheel. However, time goes by and people forget these skills or rules. We share some of those skills from driver's training you should be using every day.
Using The Correct Lane
While the highway or freeway may have multiple lanes, that does not mean you are meant to drive in whatever lane you choose. The far left lane is for faster traffic and slower traffic should keep to the right. When people use the incorrect lane, it can lead to angry drivers, road rage or dangerous driving conditions. Remember to choose your lane based on your speed and always move to the right to let faster traffic pass you when possible. If you need a refresher on changing lanes, check out our driving lessons video here:
Managing Blind Spots
A major thing to remember when changing lanes is to check your blind spots. Make sure your mirrors are in the proper place in order to see as much as the road as possible. You want to check mirrors and look over your shoulder before making the lane change. Also, you want to be aware of other drivers on the road and their blind spots. You don't want to drive in another person's blind spot, so be aware of your lane position and adjust it if you are right next to other cars.
Proper Communication With Other Drivers
As convenient as it would be, drivers don't have the power to read other driver's minds. Because of that, it is key to communicate with other drivers on the road. To do that, you must use those turn signals, which you were taught in driver's training. If you have experience driving on the roads, then you know people often forget this rule and change lanes or make turns without using their turn signal. However, it is very important that we all use our turn signals, as the National Safety Council wrote about.
Make Sure You Are Going The Right Speed
In driver's training, you were taught to adjust your driving speed to your environment. You were taught to drive slower on wet roads or when going down a hill. You were taught to brake before going around curves. While it may seem like basic things to remember, people failing to control speed is one of the main factors that contribute to crashes. While we usually focus on going too fast, you should keep in mind that going too slow can be just as dangerous.
Was there anything you may have forgotten since taking driver's training? You are always welcome to take a driving lesson with one of our professional driving instructors and touch up on those driving skills!
