What Questions To Ask A Driving Instructor?
Learning to drive can be a nerve-wracking experience, but that is why you take professional driving lessons. Your driving instructor is there to provide as much information and help as possible. During your lessons, you should be asking your instructor questions. This will help to ensure you have all the details you need to gain more confidence behind the wheel, as well as continue to progress through your driving lessons.
So, you might be wondering what questions to ask a driving instructor? We share some of our top picks below!
Why?
Simple, but probably one of the biggest questions any student driver should be asking. You are behind the wheel of a vehicle and being taught the rules of the road, but why are you being taught this or that? Why do you have to do certain things? Understanding why you're being taught what you are helps commit it to memory, so ask why if you are unsure.
What Skills Do I Need To Focus On In Order To Pass The DMV Test?
You know you have a required number of hours to complete behind the wheel before taking the road test at the DMV office. During your driving lessons you will be taught the skills needed to not only become a safer, more confident driver, but these same skills will be tested during that driving test. Your driving instructor is preparing you for the road test, which we talk about what the California DMV tests for here.
Will I Have The Same Instructor For Each Lesson?
You are spending two hours in the vehicle with this instructor, so you are going to get more and more comfortable with them over time. Because of that, you are going to want to do multiple lessons with that driving instructor.
For driving lessons at Coastline Academy, you can ask your driving instructor to book your next lesson with them. The driving instructor can check their availability and work with our support staff to make sure you get booked into their schedule for that next lesson, so make sure to ask before leaving your current driving lesson!
Should I Stay At The Speed Limit While Everybody Is Speeding Out There?
While it may be tempting to drive with the flow of the traffic, it is not always recommended (or even legal). Speed limits were researched and determined to be the safest speed vehicles should travel on that road to keep everyone safe.
While others may not be following the speed limit, that does not mean you shouldn't follow it either. We are working to eradicate car crashes across the country and that begins with following the rules of the road, like the speed limit.
How Long In Between Each Lesson Should I Schedule?
Depending on the state you are in, you may need a certain number of hours behind the wheel with a driving instructor and then a certain number of hours practicing your driving skills. In California, you need six hours of professional driving lessons and at least 50 hours of driving practice.
For those six hours, our lessons are two hours long, so you need to do three separate driving lessons on different days. Many students want to get those lessons done as soon as possible and get their drivers license. However, we recommend taking some time in between each lesson, which allows you to practice what you just learned and get even more confident behind the wheel for that next lesson.
One of our driving instructors recommends booking the second lesson six weeks after your first lesson. For the third lesson, they recommend taking it one to four weeks before taking your behind-the-wheel driving test. Of course, you are more than welcome to take more than six hours with a professional driving instructor, but you definitely should take some time between each lesson.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our friendly support staff. If you want to start your driver's training journey with Coastline Academy, make sure to sign up for Drivers Ed and book your driving lesson today.
