Who Can Take The Online Driver's License Testing Option For California DMV?

Published on 2022-05-20 in Written Test

The California Department of Motor Vehicles recently announced some changes to the way customers can take the driver's license knowledge test and you may be wondering who can take the online driver's license testing option for California DMV? It can be a little confusing, so we spell it out for you below!

At-Home Options

For this announcement, the California DMV said they were now offering online options for customers who need to take a driver's license knowledge test, so they can complete the requirement at home before visiting a DMV office. The California DMV is offering two options for customers renewing a license with a knowledge test requirement. The first option is the remote version of the traditional knowledge test, but customers may also choose an interactive eLearning course.

After filling out the online driver’s license application and paying the fee, eligible customers are prompted to choose the remote exam or eLearning course. By doing it online, customers will be reducing the amount of time needed to complete a transaction at the DMV office. After completing the online portion, customers will still need to go to an office to provide the required identity and residency documents, take a photo, provide a thumbprint, complete the vision screening and be issued a licensing document.

Online Knowledge Test

For the online test, it is available in 35 languages for customers who have an internet-enabled computer or laptop with a webcam. This test cannot be taken on a tablet or mobile device. For eligible customers, they can begin the online exam between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays. For identity verification and as a fraud prevention measure, online test participants are required to verify their identity and agree to be monitored throughout the exam. The online test can be attempted twice. If a customer fails to pass the test after two tries, they will be prompted to go to a DMV office to take the test a third time.

Interactive eLearning Course

The interactive eLearning course is something new the California DMV is offering. This can be taken on a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device and is available 24/7. For the course, there are seven interactive modules that must be completed, including quizzes after each module. This course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and is currently available only in English. This would be an ideal option for people who need to renew their license and have trouble with exams or prefer an alternative learning method.

Who Is Eligible?

The big question: who is eligible to take the online driver's license testing option? Here is a breakdown:

  • Online Knowledge Test - This online exam is available for Californians renewing their license, adults getting their license for the first time and who don't have a California ID, and Californians getting a REAL ID or motorcycle license for the first time.
  • Interactive eLearning Course - This e-learning course is only available for Californians renewing their license.
