What Do I Need to Bring to the California DMV to Get My Permit?
Ready to get your driver's license in California?
Before taking your Behind-the-Wheel test, you'll need to apply for a California Instruction Permit at a Department of Motor Vehicles site close to you. This includes taking and passing a Knowledge Test which will evaluate your knowledge of the California Driver's Handbook.
Here’s what you’ll need to have with you when you go to the DMV for your Knowledge Test:
- DL44 Application for an Instruction Permit. For a faster and easier process, complete your application online (including signatures) before making your appointment at the DMV.
- Proof of Identity and Residency (Real ID/Federal Noncompliant)
- Identity documents may include a valid passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
- Residency documents may include a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement. Minors under 18 may use their parents' documents, as long as a birth certificate or other qualifying document is also presented at the time of application.
Minors Younger than 17.5 Must Also Bring the Following to the DMV
- Certificate of Completion for the classroom portion of Driver's Education (30 hours)

- Note that minors between the ages of 17.5 and 18 do not need present proof of Driver's Education to apply for their Instruction Permit. However, you must complete all components of Driver's Ed (30 hours classroom + 6 hours behind-the-wheel) if you intend on taking the Road Test before your 18th birthday.
Pass Your Test and Get On the Road!
Once you pass your Knowledge Test, you will be issued your Instruction Permit! Don't forget to sign your permit and make sure a California-licensed parent, guardian, driving instructor, or other trusted adult is in the front seat with you at all times. Happy driving!
