In-school, high school driver’s education is seen by many as a relic of the past. With budget cuts and restructuring of curriculum programs in favor of seemingly more practical electives, California teens face far more hurdles than their predecessors when it comes to completing the state-mandated 30 hours of theoretical training that will make them eligible to take the DMV Knowledge Test and receive their learner’s permit.
Cost and accessibility to quality, approved driver’s education programs are among the two main obstacles current teens face when considering their future as drivers, causing many young people to delay getting their license until they are 18, when the state driver’s ed requirements are dropped.
Not only does this present a safety hazard with more and more teens driving to extracurricular activities and school without the proper licensing, but the lack of formalized training in defensive driving and driving skills means many teens are ill-prepared for the realities of being on the road on a daily basis.

Thanks to a $1 million Student Driver Safety Grant, Coastline is able to step in and help bridge the gap in driver’s education by providing California school districts and high school students access to zero-cost online driver’s education.
By partnering with Coastline’s voucher program, all California high school students, regardless of location or socioeconomic status, will be able to take Coastline’s DMV-certified online driver’s education course at no cost to the student or district.
Coastline’s online driver’s education program is DMV-approved, fulfilling the 30-hour requirement for teens under 18 to be eligible to test for their state learner’s permit. Our program is Turnkey Compliant, meaning it instantly fulfills all California Education Code requirements for teen driver’s education. Best of all, our course is modern and convenient, with access to self-paced, online materials available through desktops, laptops, and all mobile devices, meaning teens can learn on their own time without having to choose between driver’s ed and soccer or band practice.
We aim to reduce the administrative friction by keeping things simple.
District partners with Coastline through a simple Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which outlines the roles of both parties.
Districts will receive a Grant Award Letter that may be used to present to their board for approval and acceptance.
District schools receive an agreed-upon number of free course vouchers and distribute through site coordinator, counselors, etc. to students who are deemed eligible by the district.
