Find Out The 10 States With The Most Dangerous Drivers

Published on 2022-02-04 in News

When traveling, you might rent a car and find yourself driving in another state and in unfamiliar territory. It may seem scary, but doesn't it feel like sometimes those states have worse drivers than in your home state? Well, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released stats and we are sharing the 10 states with the most dangerous drivers.

Top 10 States With The Most Dangerous Drivers

So, do you live in one of the 10 states? Time to find out, as we break them down below, according to the NHTSA's most recent report.

10. Arizona

Total annual fatalities: 981

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.40

When it comes to Arizona, a big factor into these higher numbers is the state's interstate highways and the number of miles they cover throughout the state.

9. Florida

Total annual fatalities: 3,183

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.41

For Floridians, it looks like the problem seems to come from having distracted drivers behind the wheel. Whether it is texting or taking selfies, the drivers in Florida are not fully paying attention to the roads and causing these fatalities.

8. Louisiana

Total annual fatalities: 727

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.42

For Louisiana drivers, it looks like drinking and driving plays a huge role in the state's dangerous roads. An IIHS report showed 85% of the number of drivers killed in Louisiana had a blood alcohol level equal to or above the legal limit.

7. Oklahoma

Total annual fatalities: 640

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.43

Drinking and driving seems to be a big issue in Oklahoma also. About 89% of the drivers killed in car crashes were at or above the 0.08% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level.

6. Montana

Total annual fatalities: 184

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.43

Four out of five drivers who died in car crashes were at or above the legal BAC level in the state of Montana.

5. Wyoming

Total annual fatalities: 147

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.44

It looks like I-80 is causing some major issues in Wyoming, as it is the deadliest highway in the state. Also, it looks like a large wildlife presence, harsh weather and rural roads are also leading causes of crashes in the state.

4. Kentucky

Total fatalities: 732

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.48

For Kentucky drivers, it looks like mountains, miles of open highways and unpredictable weather are making their roads more dangerous.

3. New Mexico

Total fatalities: 424

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.53

When your roads have been called "a complete disaster," what do you expect? For New Mexico roads, 56% have recently been reported as being in poor or mediocre condition.

2. Mississippi

Total fatalities: 643

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.56

For Mississippi drivers, the dangerous roads can be linked to distracted driving, highways with hazardous sections, vehicle defects, drunk driving and disobeying traffic laws.

1. South Carolina

Total fatalities: 1,001

Fatalities per 100 million miles traveled: 1.73

The top spot goes to South Carolina and it's not for what we have seen among the other states. Fred Hoffman, Founder of Best Car Insurance Finder, said, "Considering the death rate, South Carolina has the most dangerous drivers. The drink and drive rate is quite low in this state. Most of the accidents occur because of dangerous intersections. Traffic fatalities occur 44% more frequently in South Carolina than the national average."

Did your state make the list or are your fellow drivers some of the more safer drivers in this country?
