Driver Training is an essential service, and along with the DMVs re-opening, Coastline Academy has re-opened for driving lessons. The Department of Homeland Security and Governor Newsom’s Executive Order lists driver licensing systems as part of essential critical infrastructure, and the Department of Homeland Security goes on to list driver training along with DMV workers as part of the essential work force during the COVID-19 response.

On May 21, the Driving School Association of California (DSAC) released a memo - based on the Department of Homeland Security's Advisory Memorandum and Governor Newsom's Executive Order - with the subject “Driving Schools are Essential Businesses,” stating that:

  • “With proper safety protocols, driving schools should be able to open safely”
  • “Several driving schools have confirmed their status as essential businesses with their local health officer”
  • “We have confirmed with the DMV Occupational Licensing Office that reopening our business now would not be in violation of any provisions”

The safety of our community is our top priority - both on and off the road. We have resumed behind-the-wheel lessons with significant additional safety measures in place to protect our students, instructors and those in the communities we serve.

Some of the key changes we have put in place are:

  • Students and instructors are required to self-certify based on a set of guidelines, as recommended by the CDC and WHO
  • Students and instructors must wear a mask for the duration of the lesson
  • Every car is equipped with hand sanitizer and HEPA air filters
  • All cancellation and change fees are being waived for COVID-19-related changes
  • Instructors will perform an extra car cleaning after each lesson, and before the next
