Do You Need A Learner's Permit If You Are Over 18 In Ohio?
If you over 18 and looking to drive for the first time in Ohio, then you might be wondering about the process and if you need a learner's permit if you are over 18 in Ohio? Like every driver license journey, it is different by state and can be confusing, so we address that topic below!
The Answer: Yes!
For new drivers in Ohio, everyone, regardless of age, is required to start with a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC) if they fall into one of the following categories:
- Applying for a license for the first time
- The license has been expired for more than six months
- The license has been suspended or revoked leading to an expired license
To get your TIPIC, you must take and pass a written test consisting of 40 questions, of which you must answer 30 correctly to pass. You will be tested on Ohio traffic laws, road signs and other things pertaining to driving. After having passed the required tests, including a vision test, and received your permit, you must have a licensed adult over 21 in the seat beside you at all times when driving.
Driving Skills Test
Since you are over 18, you do not have a minimum number of hours needed to practice with your TIPIC before you can apply for your road test. However, if you fail the road test, then you will be required to wait a week before you can retake it. You will also need to take an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course.
For this course, you either take a 4-hour class in person or online and then have to complete either four hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional driving instructor or 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver 21 years of age or older. Once you pass the driving skills test, you will be eligible to apply for a full Ohio driver's license!
