How Many Points Can You Miss and Still Pass The Written Test For Illinois Driver's License?
The driver's license test is administered by the Illinois Secretary of State for new drivers in Illinois. If you have met the age requirements and are ready to get started on your drivers license journey, then find out here how many points you need in order to pass the written test in Illinois.
First Step: Instruction Permit
The first step to getting your driver's license in Illinois is to get an instruction permit. This is for drivers who are 15 years old and the following rules apply:
- Parent/legal guardian consent is required to obtain an instruction permit.
- Must be enrolled in an approved driver education course, and must pass a vision and written test.
- Nighttime driving restrictions — Sun.-Thurs., 10 p.m.-6 a.m.; Fri.-Sat., 11 p.m.-6 a.m. (local curfews may differ).
- Permit must be held for a minimum of nine months.
- Must practice driving a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours at night, supervised by a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license.
- Must not acquire any driving convictions during the nine-month permit phase.
- Number of passengers limited to one in the front seat and the number of safety belts in the back seat.
- All occupants must wear safety belts.
- Cell phone use while driving including a hands-free device is prohibited for drivers under age 19, except in the case of an emergency.
- Texting while driving is prohibited.
- Permit is valid for up to two years.
Passing The Written Test
When applying for your Instruction Permit in Illinois, you will have to take a written test consisting of 35 questions. These questions will test you on your knowledge of traffic laws, highway signs and markings, road rules, road signs and safe driving practices. In order to pass the written exam, you need to answer 28 questions (80%) correctly.
Failing The Written Test
If you happen to fail the written test in Illinois, you may come back the next day to retake it. However, you will only be allowed three attempts to pass within one year. Because of that, it might be a better option if you take a step back and study some more before taking it again. To help you study, you can download the Illinois Rules of the Road to learn about motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs; and then take the sample test in the Rules of the Road Review Course Workbook.
Once passed, you would be issued your Instruction Permit and you are one step closer to gaining that freedom that comes with getting your driver's license!
