In summer 2024, 635 teen drivers were killed on US roads during this period — a 17.2% increase from two years earlier, even as overall summer traffic fatalities fell 8.1%.

Teen drivers are now the only age group whose summer fatality rate worsened over the 2022–2024 study period. That's not a coincidence. It's the predictable result of what summer brings: more driving, more passengers, more nighttime trips, less structure, and less parental oversight.

The three risk factors that make summer dangerous

AAA Foundation research identifies three primary structural drivers of the summer increase.

• More nighttime driving: Summer means later bedtimes and no school-night curfew, so teens drive later into the hours when risk is highest.
• More passengers: Summer trips are social trips, and a single teen passenger increases crash risk by 44%.
• Longer highway trips: Road trips and beach runs outpace the experience of new drivers in ways that local driving doesn't.

All three of these are a function of summer freedom, not summer recklessness.

What households can do

The research on this is straightforward. Household rules that mirror GDL best practices — no driving after 9 p.m. for the first summer, no more than one teen passenger, seatbelts non- negotiable — replicate the protections that strong GDL laws provide and that weaker state laws don't.
