What Is Drivers Ed?

For the driver education classes, students are taught the techniques of driving a vehicle, as well as basic vehicle maintenance, safety precautions, traffic regulations and laws. This course is a great way for new drivers to learn the rules of the road before getting behind the wheel themselves.

Is Drivers Ed Required In Texas?

Yes, the Texas DPS does require all driver's license applicants that are under 18 to complete a state-approved driver's education course. This course includes at least 32 hours of classroom instruction, as well as at least 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

For first-time driver’s license applicant in Texas between the ages of 18 and 24, you must successfully complete a six-hour Adult Driver Education course before you can apply for your license and driving exam. These same applicants must also take a free Impact Texas Adult Driver (ITAD) course from the Texas DPS website. Adults 25 and up must also take the course whether or not they take an adult driver education course, which is optional for this age group.

Does Drivers Ed Certificate Expire In Texas?

No, the certificate of completion from the Driver's Ed course does not expire. In Texas, there is no expiration date on your certificate, but your written test score is only good for two years. Because of this, you should make your way to the DPS with your certificate and test for your driver's license within two years of the issue date of your certificate.

If you were required to take the ITAD course, then you will receive a certificate of completion for that course once you have finished it. The ITAD certification does have an expiration date. The ITAD certificate is only valid for 90 days. If the applicant does not pass the driving skills examination within 90 days of the date on the certificate then they must restart the ITAD program.

Can Drivers Ed Expire In Texas Summary

For the Driver's Ed certificate of completion, it does not expire in Texas. However, your written test scores are only good for two years. Also, for those applicants required to take the ITAD course, that certificate is only valid for 90 days. Keep that all in mind before taking the road test, as you don't want anything to expire and have to retake it!
