How Many Points Can You Miss and Still Pass The Written Test For Indiana Driver's License?
For teen drivers in Indiana, the driver's license test is administered by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. If you have met the age requirements and are ready to get started on your drivers license journey, then find out here how many points you need in order to pass the written test in Indiana.
First Step - Obtain Your Certificate Of Driver Education (CDE)
New drivers in Indiana wanting to obtain your probationary driver's license prior to being 16 years and 270 days of age (16 years and 9 months) must be at least 15 years old to enroll in a 30-hour Driver's Ed classroom course. Once enrolled in BOTH the classroom course and behind-the-wheel driving lessons, you will receive a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE).
You are not required to complete the classroom portion prior to receiving your CDE, but you must be enrolled in both the classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons. However, we do recommend completing the classroom course prior to taking the written test at the BMV office, as it would be great preparation for you.
Second Step: Obtain Your Learner's Permit
Once you have received your CDE, you will need to go to your local BMV office and complete/provide the following to take the written test:
- Be at least 15 years of age
- Present documents proving identity, residency (two unique documents with the address and name of person), and social security number
- Present your CDE
- Pass a vision screening test
Third Step: Passing The Written Test
For the written test in Indiana, it is based on information contained in the Indiana Driver's Manual and consists of 50 questions. To pass the written test, you must demonstrate a basic understanding of Indiana traffic laws and safe driving techniques.
Written tests include multiple choice questions divided into two sections concerning traffic maneuvers and knowledge of types of traffic signs. In order to pass the written exam, you need to answer at least 40 questions (80%) correctly. Passed written test results are valid for 180 days.
Failing The Written Test
If you happen to fail the written test in Indiana, you must wait until the next business day before taking another written test. You may retake the test up to three times before a mandatory 60-day waiting period. Before retaking the written test so quickly, it might be a better option to take a step back and study some more before taking it again. To help you study, you could go back over the material in our online Driver's Ed course (including the quizzes/exams throughout the course) or you could review the Indiana Driver's Manual.
Once passed, you would be issued your Learner's Permit and you are one step closer to gaining that freedom that comes with getting your driver's license!
