Who Needs To Take Ohio Drivers Education?
If you are wanting to get your driver's license for the very first time and looking to get behind the wheel in Ohio, then you might be wondering who needs to take Ohio drivers education? Coastline Academy addresses that issue today, as we look into the rules for Driver's Ed when it comes to Ohio drivers.
New Drivers Under 18
New teen drivers in Ohio can start applying for a learners permit (officially called a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card or TIPIC) at the age of 15½. For these new drivers under 18, the Ohio BMV requires you to take a BMV-approved drivers education course, which would include 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.
So, if you are under 18 and live in Ohio, then you do need to take a BMV-approved drivers education course!
New Drivers Over 18
Regardless of your age, new drivers in Ohio are required to start with a TIPIC if they fall into one of the following categories:
- Applying for a license for the first time
- The license has been expired for more than six months
- The license has been suspended or revoked leading to an expired license
If you are over 18, in order to get your TIPIC, you must take and pass a written test consisting of 40 questions, of which you must answer 30 correctly to pass. You will be tested on Ohio traffic laws, road signs and other things pertaining to driving. Unlike new drivers under 18, you do not need to take a BMV-approved Driver's Ed course before applying for a permit.
However, an applicant for an initial driver license, who is age 18 or older and fails the first attempt at the maneuverability or road portion of the driving test, is required to take an abbreviated adult driver training course before attempting the driving test for a second time.
Who Needs To Take Ohio Driver's Ed?
For the Drivers Ed portion, the BMV requires all applicants under the age of 18 to take a state-approved drivers education course, which includes 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.
No drivers education course is required for applicants over the age of 18 unless they fail the first attempt at the driving test. If they do, then they must complete an abbreviated adult driver training course before being allowed to take a second attempt at the driving test.
