The Facts
New teen drivers run some of the highest risk of being involved in a vehicle collision. In statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens 16 to 19 were found to have the highest risk of a motor vehicle crash out of all age groups, with teens being three times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident than older drives. The months just after a teen earns their full license are the riskiest, with new drivers (16 years old) having a crash rate per mile driven that is 1.5 times higher than teens 18 to 19 years old.
While these statistics may be sobering, there is good news. Researchers at Virginia Tech recently found that teen drivers who practiced more behind the wheel had a 30% reduction in crash or near-crash incidents. This effect was strengthened with supervised driving activities, meaning a parent or qualified driving instructor was with the teen at the time of practice. A similar study published by the National Institutes of Health found that extended practice behind the wheel with a qualified driver lowered self-reported crash incidents not only domestically but also in Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden.

The Skills We Cover
The Confident Driver Lesson is designed to provide comprehensive instruction in those tricky driving situations that may not be part of your state road test. We’ll reinforce essential defensive driving behaviors on residential and commercial roads in addition to committing more substantial time to freeway and highway driving - a crucial skill for any new driver. Other important topics that may be covered in the Confident Driver Lesson include night driving, driving in inclement weather (dependent on location), parallel parking practice, and rural/mountain driving (dependent on location).
Defensive Driving Practice
Knowing how to be a good defensive driver is the first step towards road safety. Our professional driving instructors will review essential road rules such as right-of-way, safe turning, merging and lane changes, and how to spot and avoid dangerous situations on the road.
Freeway and Highway Driving
Being able to drive on the freeway or highway is a critical skill that is sometimes neglected as it is not tested on the behind-the-wheel skills exam. At Coastline, we don't teach only to the road test - we teach our drivers to be prepared and safe in all situations, regardless if they are asked for during the licensing exam.
Navigating in Inclement Weather
No city's weather is perfect, and there will come a time when a teen will have to drive in less than ideal conditions such as rain, snow, ice, or wind. The best time to learn how to handle these tricky situations is with a qualified, experienced driving instructor at your side.
Night Driving
Many of our students take their driving lessons during the day and therefore don't get a chance to practice night driving with a professional driving instructor. Our Confident Driver Lesson can be scheduled at night to best help you learn the ins and outs of driving safely after dark.

Our Confident Driver Lesson is so much more than preparation for the road test - it is preparation to be a safe driver for life. Our professional instructors will work with you to construct a lesson that suits your needs and development as a new driver, with an eye always towards safety-first.
Two-Hour Lessons
A typical Confident Driver Lesson is two hours long, giving you the time you need to practice essential skills with your qualified Coastline driving instructor. Your lesson time starts from when we pick you up and ends when we drop you off.
Our Car, Our Insurance
Coastline provides all the tools and materials you need for your Confident Driver Lesson, including a vehicle, certified instructor, and insurance! All you need to bring is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!
Post-Lesson Report Included
At the end of the lesson session, your instructor will complete a lesson report, which will summarize the skills you have mastered and those that need more practice. You'll also receive a personalized message with helpful tips and resources to study during your journey to be a safe and confident driver for life!
