Is Online Driver’s Ed Allowed In Texas?

Yes, the Texas Department of Safety allows you to take an online course for the driver's education courses in Texas. This online course must be certified and approved by the Texas DPS.

How Many Hours Of Online Driver’s Ed Do You Need In Texas?

For new drivers in Texas that choose to take an online driver's education course, you are required to complete the same amount of hours needed to complete your course in the classroom. If you are a teen, you would need to complete a 32-hour driver education course before you can get your driver's license, plus the 44 hours of behind-the-wheel experience required by the Texas DPS. For those new drivers between the ages of 18 and 24, you would need to complete a 6-hour online adult driver's ed course approved by the state.

How Does Online Driver’s Ed Work In Texas?

For the Texas online driver's ed course, you would need to fulfill the 32 or six hours of classroom instruction that is required. For teens getting their learner license, you must be between 15 and 17 years of age and you must complete the first six hours of the driver education classroom instruction if you are using the concurrent method or all 32 hours of classroom instruction if you are using the block method.

Since the course is online, you are allowed to study at your own pace while also completing your driving practice. Once you successfully complete the course and your DPS written exam is passed, you can print out a certificate to take to the DPS on the day of your driving test.

What Do I Need For Texas Driver's Ed If I Am A Teenager?

For new drivers in Texas under the age of 18, they must complete a two-part education: the classroom portion and the behind-the-wheel training portion. For the classroom portion, it must consist of 32 hours of education. This education can be done at a high school, driving school or an online course.

For the behind-the-wheel training, this consists of 7 hours of instruction behind the wheel, 7 hours of driving observation and 30 hours of additional driving practice, which includes at least 10 hours of nighttime driving. This can be done through approved supervision or through a driving school, like Coastline Academy.

What Do I Need For Texas Driver's Ed If I Am Over 18?

For adults between the ages of 18 to 24, Texas requires them to complete a six-hour Driver's Ed course before they can take the written DPS exam and completing the road test. There are no driving practice hours required for adults, but we recommend taking driving lessons to prepare for the road test at the DPS office. You can complete the six-hour course through a driving school or through an adult online driver's education course.

What Do I Need For Texas Driver's Ed If I Am Over 25?

For new drivers who are 25 years of age or older, they are not subject to the same requirements and simply need to pass the written exam and the DPS road test. However, we recommend taking the online adult driver's education course and taking driving lessons. You need to pass the written exam and road test, so going into it fully prepared is your best option.
