Can You Renew Your Driver's License Online?
While the process of applying to get a driver's license can get rather intense, once you have the license in your hands renewing it can be a pretty easy thing to do. Like when applying, every state is different with their requirements and what they do or don't allow, so can you renew your driver's license online? Find out the rules and regulations for each state below.
Alabama
Alabama does allow for online renewals of your driver's license. You can renew it online once every eight years, so basically every other renewal you can do online.
Alaska
Alaska allows you to renew online if you are within one year of expiration on your current card. You cannot have completed the renewal process online the last time you renewed though. There are certain conditions that still require you to appear in person also.
Arizona
If your Arizona Driver License is due for renewal, you can renew online in most cases. Sign in to your account at AZMVDNow.gov and access “Renew Now” in the My Credential box and follow the instructions.
Arkansas
You will need to call Driver's License Issuance at 501-682-7059 to see if you qualify for a by mail renewal. Arkansas DFA Revenue Office doesn't allow online renewals at this time.
California
If you aren't changing your address and the California DMV already has your social security number on file, then you can renew online. There are certain other restrictions that apply.
Colorado
You may renew your adult driver license or ID card at any time prior to the expiration date in Colorado - you shouldn't wait until it expires‚ online renewals aren't possible if your license is expired over one year. Non-commercial driver licenses and instruction permits can be renewed without testing up to one year after the license/permit expires.
Connecticut
You can renew your driver’s license online on your license expiration date or as early as 180 days (six months) before your driver’s license expires in Connecticut. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, like if obtaining a REAL ID for the first time.
Delaware
Delaware driver licenses can be renewed at any Division of Motor Vehicle facility and online. You may renew at any time during the 180-day (six month) period prior to the expiration of your license.
District of Columbia
In the District of Columbia, online driver license renewals are only available to residents who currently have a REAL ID or Limited Purpose credential.
Florida
The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles allows drivers to do an online renewal every other renewal period.
Georgia
In Georgia, the Georgia Department of Driver Services allows most customers to renew online if you are a Georgia resident, at least 18 years old and your current license, ID or permit is a GA Real ID document. You cannot renew online if your license is suspended, cancelled or revoked.
Hawaii
The state of Hawaii does not currently allow for online license renewals.
Idaho
The Idaho Transportation Department allows you to renew online as long as you are renewing for 4 years, your most recent renewal was for 4 years or less, you are a US citizen or permanent resident and you are not making any changes to the original ID.
Illinois
For Illinois, the Illinois Secretary of State allows you to renew online if they deem you to be a "Safe Driver." If you are a Safe Driver and eligible for the online renewal process, you will receive a letter with the required PIN approximately 90 days before your driver's license or ID card's expiration date.
Indiana
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles allows you to renew online as long as certain conditions are met.
Iowa
For drivers in Iowa, the Iowa Department of Transportation allows drivers licenses to be renewed online every other issuance if you meet the criteria.
Kansas
For drivers in Kansas, the Kansas Department of Revenue allows drivers licenses to be renewed online every other issuance if you meet the criteria.
Kentucky
In Kentucky, drivers are able to renew their driver's license online. This is offered to residents seeking to maintain the same card version they have and whose name or address has not changed.
Louisiana
The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles allows drivers who don't need to update any personal information to renew their license online.
Maine
For Maine drivers, any resident with an active non-commercial license, motorcycle license, motor driven cycle restricted license, or a Maine ID card may use the online service to process a renewal or replacement of your driver’s license or ID card.
Maryland
The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) will notify you by mail and email prior to your license expiration. The MDOT MVA notice will include instructions on how to renew your driver’s license, including whether or not you can do it online.
Massachusetts
In Massachusetts, if you already have your REAL ID and are up for renewal (check for the yellow star in the upper right hand corner of your license or ID), you are already eligible to do so online.
Michigan
The Michigan Secretary of State allows drivers to renew online every other issuance if you are a U.S. citizen and have a valid Social Security number on file with the Secretary of State.
Minnesota
Minnesota residents can renew their standard driver’s license or ID online if they do not need to make any changes to the information on it. If you have a REAL ID or need to make changes, you will need to visit a DPS Office in person.
Mississippi
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety allows drivers who meet certain conditions to renew their license online every other renewal.
Missouri
The Missouri Department of Revenue does not currently allow for online license renewals.
Montana
The Montana Secretary of State does not currently allow for online license renewals.
Nebraska
The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles allows you to renew once every 10 years as long as your name has not changed since the last issuance and your physical description has not changed significantly.
Nevada
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will send you a postcard informing you whether you can renew online or if you need to appear in person.
New Hampshire
Drivers whose renewal notice contains a “Renewal Identification Number (RIN)” are eligible to renew online in New Hampshire.
New Jersey
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission allows only drivers who have received a notice from the Motor Vehicle Commission with instructions to renew online are eligible to do so.
New Mexico
In New Mexico, drivers who meet certain eligibility requirements can renew their license online.
New York
The New York Department of Motor Vehicles allows most New Yorkers to renew their driver’s license online, as long as they’ve first passed a vision test at a DMV-approved vision test provider.
North Carolina
The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles allows drivers who meet certain eligibility requirements to renew their license online.
North Dakota
The North Dakota Department of Transportation allows drivers to renew online every other renewal cycle. First time REAL ID applicants must renew in person.
Ohio
In Ohio, drivers who meet certain eligibility requirements can renew their license online.
Oklahoma
If you already have an Oklahoma Driver License or State Identification Card, you can renew or replace it online.
Oregon
In Oregon, drivers can renew online, but first time REAL ID applicants must renew in person.
Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation allows non-commercial drivers have the option to renew online, providing there are no corrections or changes other than a change of address.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island allows drivers who are not submitting any changes to their license information to be eligible to renew online.
South Carolina
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles allows drivers in good standing to renew their license online every other issuance. A vision screening is required though and can be waived if an SC-licensed eye care professional electronically submits the SCDMV a Certificate of Vision Examination dated within the past 12 months.
South Dakota
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety allows drivers who meet certain criteria to renew their driver's license online. They must renew in person once every 10 years though.
Tennessee
In Tennessee, eligible drivers with a current valid photo license may renew online and receive an updated license re-using their current photo.
Texas
The Texas Department of Public Safety allows drivers to renew online every other renewal cycle.
Utah
If you qualify to renew online in Utah, you will have received a notice by mail with your PIN authorization 90 days prior to the expiration date.
Vermont
In Vermont, drivers are allowed to renew their license online if they meet certain criteria.
Virginia
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles allows drivers to renew online every other renewal cycle. Your renewal notice will indicate if you are eligible to renew online or whether you must renew in person.
Washington
The Washington State Department of Licensing allows certain drivers to renew online, as long as the criteria is met.
West Virginia
The West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offers online renewal for non-commercial drivers ages 21 years and older, and applicants must be US citizens with licenses in good standing. No changes can be made to name, address, or certain driver information when renewing online.
Wisconsin
If you meet the qualifications, you can renew your drivers license online in Wisconsin.
Wyoming
The Wyoming Department of Transportation only allows you to renew your driver's license by mail or in person.
Keep in mind, as the deadline for obtaining a REAL ID approaches, most state licensing agencies are requiring you to get the REAL ID in person. Keep that in mind when attempting to renew your license online.
