Can You Take Drivers Training Online In Illinois?

Published on 2022-05-09 in Drivers Ed

While we have seen a shift to online learning since the pandemic took over the world two years ago, we are starting to see more and more things open up and go back to the new normal. If you are looking to get your driver's license for the first time, you might be wondering: can you take drivers training online in Illinois? We have that answer for you below!

What Does Driver's Training Mean?

We take a closer look at what driver's training is exactly. Driver training means behind-the-wheel instruction, extended learning, observation time and classroom instruction provided by a driving school whose purpose is to teach students how to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Can You Take Driver's Training Online In Illinois?

In Illinois, this would depend on your age. If you are under 18 years old, then you must complete a state-approved 30-hour Driver's Ed course. Illinois does not allow online drivers education classes and only offers in-person classes for new drivers under 18. They did allow for Zoom and online classes during the height of the pandemic, but those offerings have ended. If you are between the ages of 18 and 20, then you are required to take a six-hour adult drivers education course. For this age group, it can be done online.

Driving Lessons Requirements

If you are under 18, you must complete six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional instructor in order to obtain your driver's license. You must also practice driving a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours at night, supervised by a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. Needless to say, this portion of driver's training cannot be done online since you need to be inside a car to complete it.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 20, there are no behind-the-wheel requirements in Illinois. We recommend practice driving a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours at night. You will need to pass a road test in order to obtain your driver's license, so having that driving practice will only help you out. You can take driving lessons with a private instructor, like Coastline Academy, and in order to do that, you would need to obtain your learner's permit first.

To summarize, part of driver's training can be done online in Illinois (Drivers Ed, if you are between the ages of 18 and 20), but the driving lessons, if you decide to take them, would be done in-person. For anyone under 18, the driver's ed course and behind-the-wheel driving lessons are both done in-person. We hope this clears it up for you!
