Driving Lessons Video Series: How To Perform A Lane Change
Performing a lane change during your DMV road test can be a stressful time. It seems like it would be a simple move, but with the car moving and the driver needing to check blindspots, the lane change can be difficult and scary to new drivers. Our Driving Lessons video series continues today with one of our driving instructors showing you how to perform a proper lane change.
Lane Change
An experienced driver would say a lane change would almost seem like a mundane task, since it is done so often. However, it can be a difficult task for teen drivers. Not only are you having to check your mirrors and over your shoulder for cars in your blindspots, but you also need to maintain your speed when making that lane change.
The Steps
When it comes to performing a lane change, there are quite a few steps requiring you to check this or that to make sure it is safe to change the lane. Here are the steps to perform a safe lane change:
- When making a lane change, always check the road markings which separate your lane from the adjacent lane you wish to merge with before beginning the maneuver.
- Start by signaling your intention to change lanes.
- Use your rearview and side mirrors, as well as checking over your shoulder to make sure traffic is clear.
- While maintaining your speed, merge into the adjacent lane.
- When the maneuver is complete, deactivate your turn signal.
