Driving Lessons Video Series: How to Properly Approach A Limit Line

Published on 2022-05-12 in Driving Lessons

When taking your road test at the DMV office, one thing you will be tested on is how well you do when approaching a stop sign. A big part of that is the limit line and where your vehicle ends up compared to that limit line. Our Driving Lessons video series continues today, as one of our driving instructors will show you how to properly approach a limit line.

What Is A Limit Line?

If you are unfamiliar with what a limit line is, it is the line marked on the surface of the roadway that indicates the spot where traffic is required to stop for the purpose of complying with a stop sign, giveway sign, pedestrian crossing, railroad crossing, school crossing point or traffic signal. While drivers are mainly focused on the stop sign and making sure they make a complete stop, where that complete stop happens is important, as you don't want to be stopped with half of your vehicle past the limit line.

How To Properly Approach A Limit Line

As you approach the stop sign, you will notice that the front of your car blocks the view of the area directly in front of your vehicle. This makes things difficult, as the stop limit line may not be visible even if you are behind the line. Practice makes perfect, as the best way to learn how far away the car is from the limit line is practicing with whichever car you drive. A good way to practice is with the help of your front seat passenger, as they can help you determine where the limit line is even though you can't see it.

Limit Line Driving Tips

So, how do you make sure you stay behind the limit line? When speaking with our driving instructors, here are some tips they share with students:

  • By the time the limit line disappears over the dash, you should almost be completely stopped. By doing this, by the time you actually stop, you're at the right spot.
  • Look where the line meets the curb, and use poles, objects, anything you see that matches up as close as possible with the limit line and stop there.
