Driving Lessons Video Series: How To Properly Enter A Center Turn Lane

Making a left turn onto a busy street can be quite nerve-wracking, especially for new teen drivers. It is one of the maneuvers tested for during the DMV road test, so you will want to make sure you have perfected it before your behind-the-wheel drive test. Entering A Center Turn Lane

When turning into a center turn lane, it can be difficult since there are no lights to help guide you. It is you, a stop sign and traffic that may never slow down! Your nerves may be working overtime during those peak driving hours, but our video can help calm those nerves for you.

The Steps

For the center turn lanes, they are marked with solid yellow lines on the outside and broken yellow lines on the inside. Here are the steps to properly enter the center turn lane:

• Using a center turn lane to make a left turn is primary when the street is busy.
• After stopping behind the crosswalk, you may crawl forward in order to see in both directions.
• When traffic from the left is clear and the center turn lane is clear, make the turn into the center turn lane.
• Once in the center turn lane, turn on the right turn signal.
• When the lane closest to the center turn lane is open, make the lane change into that lane.
• If traffic is light or absent, you may make the turn directly into the new lane or the center turn lane.
