How Many Hours Do You Need With A Driving Instructor In Indiana?
For those new teen drivers in Indiana, you are probably working at getting everything in place to be fully prepared to get your driver's license. One of the big questions many teens and parents want to know is how many hours do you need with a driving instructor in Indiana? We have the details for you below!
Learner's Permit
For teens in Indiana, if you want to get your probationary driver's license prior to being 16 years and 270 days of age (16 years and 9 months), then you have to enroll in a 30-hour Driver's Ed course. To enroll in this course, you have to be at least 15 years old. Once you are enrolled in the classroom course and signed up for behind-the-wheel driving lessons, you will receive a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE).
You are not required to complete the classroom portion prior to receiving your CDE, but you must be enrolled in both the classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons. However, we do recommend completing the classroom course prior to taking the written test at the BMV office, as it would be great preparation for you. Now that you have your CDE in hand, you can head to your local BMV office and take the vision and written test.
How Many Hours Of Driving Lessons Does Indiana Require?
Once you have passed the vision and written test, you will receive your learner's permit. This allows you to start your behind-the-wheel driving lessons, which Coastline Academy offers. For these lessons, you need six hours total and they can be conducted in one-hour or two-hour increments and you cannot do more than one lesson in a day. If you wish to obtain your probationary driver's license prior to being 16 years and 270 days of age, these driving lessons are required.
On top of the six hours of driving lessons, teens are also required to complete 50 hours of driving practice outside of the lessons with a licensed driving instructor, a certified driver rehabilitation specialist, or a licensed driver who is at least 25 years of age and who is related to you by marriage, blood, or legal status. If the licensed driver is your spouse, they have to be at least 21 years of age. Of those 50 hours, 10 of them have to be completed at night. The minimum amount of time these hours can be completed is in 30 days.
Probationary License In Indiana
After completing a minimum of 56 hours of driving lessons and practice, you are now eligible to take the road test to get your probationary license if you are at least 16 years and 90 days of age and have held your learner's permit for 180 days (six months). If you pass the road test, you will receive your probationary license.
How Many Hours Needed With Driving Instructor In Indiana?
To sum it up, new drivers in Indiana will need to complete a minimum of 56 hours of driving time before getting their probationary license. Of those 56 hours, at least 6 hours must be completed with a professional driving instructor but you are always welcome to do more since practice makes perfect!
