How Many Hours Of Driving Lessons Does Wisconsin Require?

Published on 2022-05-06 in Driving Lessons

For new drivers in Wisconsin, you may be trying to get everything in order as you prepare to get your driver's license. It can be a stressful time with trying to make sure everything is in place. You may be wondering how many hours of driving lessons does Wisconsin require? Find out that answer below!

First Step: Instruction Permit

If you are 15 years old or older, then you are eligible for an instruction permit. To get your permit, you mast pass the signs, knowledge test and vision screening. If you are under 18 years old, you must be enrolled in, or have completed, driver education; be enrolled in a school program or high school equivalency program, graduated from high school or be enrolled in a home-based private education program and you must have an adult sponsor and pay the required driver licensing fee.

Driving Hours Required

Before you can apply for your probationary driver license, you must hold your instruction permit for at least six months and be violation free. You must also show proof of completion of a state-approved driver education course.

The Wisconsin DMV requires students to complete six hours of behind-the-wheel drivers training with a professional driving instructor and six hours of in-car observation time. In addition to those 12 hours, you will need to complete 50 hours of driving practice, 10 of which must be completed at night.

That means you would need, at minimum, 62 hours of driving lessons before you can take the road test to get your probationary driver's license in Wisconsin.
