Mississippi and Wyoming: When Every Risk Factor Lines Up at Once

Published on in Industry

“Only two states have high rural exposure, weak GDL laws, and no driver's ed requirement all at the same time.”

Individually, a weak GDL law, a lack of a driver's ed requirement, or heavy rural road exposure each raise teen driving risk. Put all three together, and you get the two most dangerous environments for a new driver in the country: Mississippi and Wyoming.

The three-way overlap

Both states combine no mandatory driver's education, no meaningful nighttime or passenger GDL restrictions, and crash-death distributions heavily skewed toward rural roads. Compare that to Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas, and North Dakota, which share two of the three risk factors but at least require some form of driver's education — and see meaningfully lower fatality rates as a result.

The other end of the spectrum

Massachusetts and New Jersey sit at the opposite extreme: low rural exposure, strong GDL frameworks, and mandatory driver's education for all ages. Their teen fatality rates rank among the lowest in the country.

Driver's education is the one factor in this equation a family controls directly — it doesn't depend on your state's legislature or its geography.
