Top Mistakes To Avoid During Behind-The-Wheel Driving Test

Published on 2022-01-20 in Driving Test

The final step before getting your driver's license is passing the behind-the-wheel driving test at the DMV office. You are feeling anxious, nervous and worried, which is completely normal. A stranger is going to come into your car and start critiquing your driving skills. Who wouldn't be nervous? While you want to pass with flying colors and get your driver's license, a good way to do that is avoid some of the top mistakes drivers make during the road test, which you can find below!

1. Not Turning On The Headlights

If you are taking your road test during the day, you might not think about needing to turn on your headlights. You may need to though, depending on the state you live. There are 14 states that require headlights in poor weather conditions and another 18 states that require them to be on when your windshield wipers are active. If it is a rainy/foggy/dreary day, make sure to turn on those headlights.

2. Hitting Something

This seems like a pretty clear thing to avoid, but you never want to hit a person, animal or other vehicle. Not only is this during the driving test, but also any time you are driving! Keep in mind, this also includes hitting the curb while trying to park. If you do this in California, then you will automatically fail, as it is considered a critical driving error.

3. Not Using Turn Signals

Not everyone on the road is inside your head. You need to let other drivers know what your intentions are, which is why using your turn signal is so crucial. You need to make sure you are consistently using them during the road test, as the evaluator is keeping track of this.

4. Losing Speed

Speed limits are posted for a reason. For that location, the speed limit lets you know a safe traveling speed. While many drivers will try their best to stay below the speed limit during their road test, some might go too slow. Going too far under the speed limit can make you lose some points on the test, so try staying as close to that number as possible and always keep your eyes on the road for speed limit signs, as speed limits change often.

5. Not Checking Your Blind Spots

A mistake new drivers often make is forgetting to check their blind spots when pulling out into traffic or changing lanes. Not only is this a major safety issue, but evaluators will be looking for this during the driving test. During your practice time, make sure you are always looking over your shoulder when changing lanes. You never know when a vehicle might sneak up on you. Checking the blind spots can save a car crash from happening.
