Who Is Required To Take The IMPACT Texas Teen Drivers Program?
As a teen driver in Texas, you may be making your way through the Graduated Driver License Program and wondering if you are required to take the IMPACT Texas Teen Drivers program. Coastline Academy takes a look at this program offered by the Texas Department of Public Safety and who is required to take it!
IMPACT Texas Teen Drivers Program
The IMPACT Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program was developed by the Department of Public Safety. The goal of the program is to save lives through awareness and education. The program is comprised of 8 videos that explain the hard facts of the dangers of distracted driving, including real-life stories of teens that have lost their lives due to distracted driving.
"It is not about bad kids doing bad things, but about good kids making poor choices," says the Texas ITTD program, who goes on to explain that many of these poor choices center around cell phone use, as well as attempts at multitasking while driving, both of steal focus from the road and the operation of the motor vehicle.
Who Is Required To Take ITTD?
Any applicant who has taken a Teen Driver Education Course (32 hours classroom/44 hours behind-the-wheel), received a certificate of completion, and has an appointment to take a drive test is required to watch the ITTD program. Once you have viewed the program, you will receive a completion certificate to bring with you to your drive test, which must be dated within 90 days of that drive test.
Details To Remember
Keep in mind that ITTD is not part of the 32 classroom hours of Driver Education. You will need to complete the ITTD program after finishing both your 32 classroom hours and all of your behind-the-wheel instruction.
Do not feel like you must watch the full ITTD program in one single viewing. The video is broken up into eight modules and each module must be completed before you can move on to the next module. Take your time and take breaks between modules.
After you complete the ITTD video, you will be emailed a copy of your completion certificate. You must print this certificate and submit a copy to the driver license office at the time of your road test.
Note that although the ITTD program is required, the Texas DPS offers it free of charge.
