When it comes to texting while driving, currently 48 of the 50 states in this country ban text messaging for all drivers. While Texas passed laws in 2017 that made it illegal to text while driving anywhere in the state, there are some cities that also ban all cellphone use while driving.
Texas Cellphone Laws
Whether you are learning to drive in Texas or a seasoned driver, it's always a good idea to have a refresher course on what the current laws are. When it comes to Texas, here are some cellphone laws to remember, per the Texas Department of Transportation:
- You cannot send or receive electronic messages while driving in Texas.
- Drivers with learner's permits are prohibited from using cellphones in the first six months of driving.
- Using any handheld device in your vehicle in a school zone is illegal.
- Drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using handheld devices.
- School bus drivers may not use cellphones at all while driving if children are present.
- Cellphone laws can change from city to city.
Stay Safe and Informed
One of the keys to helping eradicate car crashes is to stay informed of the laws. By knowing these laws, it can keep yourself and everyone around you safe. The Texas DOT says to:
- Never use your cellphone while driving.
- Pull off the road entirely and come to a complete stop before you talk or text.
