Driving Ages: What Is The Youngest Age To Drive In Indiana?

Published on 2022-06-01 in Driver License

When those teen years hit, your brain starts thinking about getting your drivers license more and more. You want to get behind the wheel of a vehicle as soon as possible. So, you may be wondering, what is the youngest age to drive in Indiana? The earlier the better, right? We give you the answer below!

Graduated Driver License Program

For the state of Indiana, any prospective driver under the age of 18 must go through the Graduate Driver License Program (GDL Program). With this initiative, new drivers go through different phases of driving privileges before they can earn the right to a full, unrestricted drivers license.

The First Phase

For those new drivers wanting to get their probationary driver's license prior to being 16 years and 270 days (16 years and 9 months), then you have to enroll in a 30-hour Driver's Ed course. To enroll in this course, you have to be at least 15 years old. Once you have enrolled in the classroom course and signed up for behind-the-wheel driving lessons, you will receive a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE).

You are not required to complete the classroom portion prior to receiving your CDE, but you must be enrolled in both the classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons. However, we do recommend completing the classroom course prior to taking the written test at the BMV office, as it would be great preparation for you.

Once you receive the CDE, you can head to your local BMV office and take the written test. If you pass this written test, you will receive your learner's permit and can begin taking driving lessons and practicing your driving skills.

Driving Age Requirements In Indiana

The learner's permit will allow you to drive a vehicle with the sole purpose of learning to drive. You must have your permit in order to drive with a licensed driving instructor, a certified driver rehabilitation specialist, or a licensed driver who is at least 25 years of age and who is related to you by marriage, blood, or legal status. If the licensed driver is your spouse, they have to be at least 21 years of age. With the GDL Program in place, that means the youngest age anyone can drive in Indiana would be 15 years old.
