Driving Ages: What Is The Youngest Age To Drive In Ohio?
The moment you become a teenager, you start to think more and more about being able to drive and getting your driver's license. Teenagers want to get behind the wheel of a vehicle as soon as possible. Because of that, we often have people asking what is the youngest age to drive in Ohio? While teens want it to be the soonest possible time, we share the actual answer below.
Graduated Driver License Program
In the state of Ohio, any prospective driver under the age of 18 must go through the Graduate Driver License Program (GDL Program). With this initiative, new drivers go through different phases of driving privileges before they can earn the right to a full, unrestricted drivers license.
The First Phase
The first phase of the GDL Program in Ohio is to obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). New teen drivers can start applying for a learners permit at the age of 15½. If you are under 18, Ohio requires you to take a BMV-approved drivers education course, which would include 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.
Once you have successfully completed the Driver's Ed course, you can head to the BMV office. Once there, you will also need to take and pass both a written knowledge test and a vision test. If you pass both, then you will be issued your TIPIC!
Driving Age Requirements In Ohio
Ohio has restrictions in place for new drivers. With the TIPIC, you can only drive when supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or certified driving instructor if you are under the age of 16. If you are at least 16, then you can drive with any licensed driver at least 21 years of age.
To summarize, you can get your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card at 15½ years old, which allows you to drive with a licensed parent, guardian or certified driving instructor. Get ready, as this exciting time in your life is about to begin!
