How Many Points Can You Miss and Still Pass The Written Test For Ohio Driver's License?

Published on 2022-08-15 in Driver License

The driver's license test is administered by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles for new teen drivers in Ohio. Once you have met the age requirements and are ready to get started on your drivers license journey, then find out here how many points you need in order to pass the written test in Ohio.

First Step - Instruction Permit

The first step to getting your driver's license in Ohio is to obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). You can begin applying for the TIPIC at the age of 15½. If you are under 18, Ohio requires you to take a BMV-approved drivers education course, which would include 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.

When applying for the TIPIC at the BMV office, you will also need to take and pass both a written knowledge test and a vision test. If you pass both, then you will be issued your TIPIC!

Passing The Written Test

For the written test in Ohio, it consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. These questions will test you on your knowledge of traffic laws, highway signs and markings, road rules, road signs and safe driving practices. In order to pass the written exam, you need to answer 30 questions (75%) correctly.

Failing The Written Test

If you happen to fail the written test in Ohio, you must wait at least 24 hours before retesting. While there is no limit on how many times you can retake the exam, it might be a better option if you take a step back and study some more before taking it again. To help you study, you can download the Ohio Digest of Motor Vehicles to learn about motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs; and then take a Sample Driver License Knowledge Test.

Once passed, you would be issued your TIPIC and you are one step closer to gaining the freedom that comes with getting your driver's license!
