Where do driving lessons start in Chico?
Coastline driving lessons in Chico can start from home, school, work, or our Chico meeting point at 669 Palmetto Ave. The Chico office is primarily a lesson meeting point rather than a walk-in storefront, so your instructor will meet you there at your scheduled time. Students also commonly start lessons at Chico High School, Pleasant Valley High School, and other nearby schools so they can begin right after class. The lesson ends back at the pickup location.
Which DMV do Chico students use for the road test?
Most Coastline students in Chico take their driving test at the Chico DMV Field Office at 107 Parmac Rd #1, Chico, CA 95926. The Oroville DMV Field Office at 775 Mitchell Ave, Oroville, CA 95965 is the nearest common alternative when Chico appointments are limited. You need to schedule your own DMV driving-test appointment through the California DMV website. If you book a Coastline Road Test Session, we can provide the pre-test prep lesson and the vehicle for the test.
What is the driving test like at the Chico DMV?
The Chico DMV driving test is a 15-20 minute test on local streets near the DMV, and does not include freeway driving. Students should be ready to demonstrate safe turns, lane changes, intersection handling, speed control, backing, observation, and general traffic awareness. Roads in the area include Cohasset Rd, Mangrove Ave, East Ave, and Manzanita Ave, so Coastline instructors make sure students are comfortable with the types of traffic, intersections, and lane choices found around that part of Chico. We practice the skills and local driving environment, but we do not teach or rehearse an official DMV test route.
Do you offer driving lessons in Oroville, Paradise, Yuba City, or Red Bluff?
Yes. Coastline's Chico service area extends beyond Chico and can include Oroville, Paradise, Durham, Corning, Yuba City, and Red Bluff. Availability varies by location because instructors may have fewer open pickup times in the farther parts of the service area. If you do not see lesson times at your home address, try entering a Chico or Oroville pickup address or our Chico office meeting point. The booking system shows current availability for the address you enter.
Does Coastline work with Chico-area charter schools and community programs?
Yes. Coastline works with a number of charter schools, agencies, and community programs in the Chico area, including Sequoia Grove Charter Alliance programs, Heartland Charter School, Mooretown Rancheria, Sevita Health, and public programs such as the California Department of Rehabilitation. When a school or agency is paying for lessons, it typically sends Coastline a purchase order or other authorization. We then set up the student's account so lessons can be scheduled through Coastline. Any expiration date or other restriction attached to program-funded credits is set by the sponsoring organization so please be mindful of that when booking.
How much do driving lessons cost in Chico?
Coastline offers several driving lesson options in Chico, including individual two-hour lessons and discounted multi-lesson packages. Teen packages also include the California online drivers education course for free. The total price depends on the package you choose and whether you select home pickup or a Coastline meeting point. Current Chico pricing is shown in the package and booking sections of this page so you can compare the available options before purchasing.
How many driving lessons do I need before the road test?
California requires minors to complete six total hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction, which is three two-hour lessons. There is no minimum requirement for new drivers over the age of 18. To build the skills to be a safe and confident driver, we recommend the five-lesson package which give you 10 hours behind the wheel.
What should I bring to my first behind-the-wheel driving lesson?
Bring a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. You'll also need to bring your permit and sneakers or other appropriate driving footwear (not flip flops please). We provide the car, a certified instructor, and insurance.
Why does a Coastline instructor need to sign my teen's permit?
If your new driver is under 17 1/2, they can't drive with you until they take their first professional driving lesson. The provisional instruction permit is not valid for supervised practice until the licensed driving instructor validates the permit. A Coastline instructor does this at the student's first lesson. After that, the teen may practice with a qualified supervising adult. Bring the physical permit to every behind-the-wheel lesson because the instructor must verify it before driving.
What happens when the six hours of driving lessons are done?
After you complete the required six hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction, your Coastline instructor will issue a "golden ticket", which is an official DMV certificate. You should keep that certificate with your instruction permit and bring it to the DMV for your driving test. If part of the six-hour requirement was completed at another licensed driving school, Coastline can generally count properly documented training hours toward the total before completing the remaining instruction.
Can I use a Coastline car for my DMV driving test?
Yes. Coastline's Road Test Session is designed for students who want to take the California DMV driving test in a Coastline vehicle. It includes a pre-test driving lesson, transportation to the DMV, and use of an insured Coastline training car equipped with an instructor brake. Schedule your DMV driving test appointment first, then book the Coastline Road Test Session for the same date and location.
What is Coastline's cancellation and rescheduling policy?
You can cancel or reschedule a Coastline driving lesson without a fee when you make the change at least 72 hours before the scheduled start time. Changes made 24 to 72 hours before the lesson are subject to a 35% fee, and cancellations made less than 24 hours before the lesson, as well as no-shows, are charged the full lesson price. Check the booking terms for the full policy.
