Is My Parent Eligible To Teach Parent-Taught Driver Education In Texas?

Published on 2021-12-02 in Drivers Ed

For new drivers in Texas, you might be contemplating on what type of Driver's Ed you will be taking. One option is parent-taught driver's ed, but you may be asking: Is my parent eligible to teach Parent-Taught Driver Education in Texas? We address that topic below!

Who Can Teach Parent-Taught Driver Education

In Texas, only a teen's parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian is able to teach Parent-Taught Driver Education. If you have a power of attorney, that is not sufficient enough to teach this course. Besides the ones listed, no other relative is approved to be an instructor.

Parent-Taught Driver Education Instructor Eligibility

For the Parent-Taught Driver Education option, whichever relative you decide to use as an instructor, they must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to teach you:

  • Must have held a valid driver's license for the past three years (individuals who lived outside Texas during any part of the last three years must bring the certified abstract driving record from their former state when the student applies for a license)
  • Have not had his/her driver license suspended, revoked or forfeited in the past three years
  • Has less than six points on his/her driving record
  • Has never been convicted of or received a probated sentence for Driving While Intoxicated, Driving Under the Influence or Criminally Negligent Homicide
  • Is not disabled due to mental illness

Before you begin the Parent-Taught Driver Education, instructors will want to make sure they meet the requirements. If they are unsure, you can check their criminal record and driving record online before signing up. If the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation determines they are not eligible to teach, then none of the instruction will count and you will not be issued a license.

Of course, our Driver's Ed program is state-approved by Texas. And once you complete that, we have state-approved driving instructors to help you learn the rules of the road during our driving lessons.
